Václav Boštík (1913–2005) and Adriena Šimotová (1926–2014) were remarkable figures whose significance transcends the boundaries of the Czech art scene. Both Boštík and Šimotová were fundamentally interested in experimenting with diverse art forms, with various materials employed chiefly as platforms for the expression of the principles of harmony and order.
In spite of the apparent incompatibility of their styles, both artists shared a lifelong search for the spiritual and existential aspects of being. Their art comprised a means for locating criteria necessary for understanding the world, which they authentically perceived as the embodiment of a meditative form of lyrical abstraction. Towards the end of their lives they thus produced powerfully intimate testimonies to the spiritual journey of people living in difficult times. The crystalline clarity – even urgency – of their artistic expression accentuates the undeniable significance of spirituality in modern art.
